Wondering: does terrain provide a safe flank? i'm thinking in particular whether a river or a table edge provides infantry with a safe flank.
and therefore a combat modifier in shock combat.

hmm. so an impassible piece of terrain or a building or wood (if unoccupied) counts as a safe flank and covers a +1 in shock combat. so a river can be impassible and therefore a safe flank.
just leaves the table edge. not sure if that's a safe flank or not.

Unless I have missed something it seems very unlikely that the unknown area beyond the table edge would ever be considered safe.
Are you contemplating a lot of 'corner sitting' Dave? I would have thought you would be charging forward killing generals (again).
