To date I have been reading the morale test on page 56 as also applying to skirmisher or artillery exchanges of fire.

Is that right ?

In the English version, there is no limitation of the firefight morale test to just volley fire so, presumably it applies to ALL units who exchange fire and where at least an attrition is inflicted. This means, if I have it right, that if a skirmish fire exchange between a detached skirmish unit and the integrated skirmishers of an infantry unit (or between two detached skirmisher units) causes at least an attrition, then the firefight morale test applies ...

I only ask now due to the latest clarification from Herve that detached skirmishers must return fire if fired upon by skirmishers.

That is how we understand it.
It has become our practice to have the opponent declare if they will return fire before any dice are rolled.
