Passing through artillery

Message par RogerGreenwood » mar. 24 mai 2022 12:11

We have had discussions about passing through artillery. One of our players quoted D'Erlon's corps at Waterloo had difficulties forming up through the French batteries. Also, given the equipment required to support the guns, limbers, ammunition stacks and so forth, is it really that easy to pass through a deployed battery?
We wonder if passage of lines for artillery should have the same rules as other units.

I agree with you. It seems difficult To pass througt any artillery.
It's the same for supported To the rear. Maybe 200 meters form the guns to the intendance on rear.

However it could be very To protect an artillery if you don't allow this exception.

It means the flank protection needs to be 1 UD away from the artillery and its rear support. Should be possible. Flank support will be within 2UD

agree, but then the gap between the 2 supports is greater than 3UD so your artillery could be charged easily..

Interesting, we usually place our guns in line with our infantry, but guns are rarely charged unless isolated.
I suspect we may have different styles of play.
So much to learn!

hmmm, interesting ... we place our guns in front of the infantry just like in the diagram on page 62.

We might place them behind, but if the infantry advance later, the gun fire is blocked.

Yes we often put a unit in rear contact with an artillery battery to give it two safe flanks. However its very difficult at times to bring the infantry unit out from behind the guns as you can't do an oblique move through them.
