Passage of lines

Hi Guys,

Passage of lines on p31 requires a 1 UD gap to the left and right of the unit to be passed through.

I have also heard it ruled that there needs to be a 1 UD gap in front and behind of the unit being passed through - where does this come from as it is not in the rulebook?

Might be confusion about a gap being required when one unit is diagonally ahead of the other. I.e. Ahead of a line extending the unit's front and to the side of a line extending the flank. A 1 UD gap is still required.

What's the best description? Anything within 1 UD of the corner of a unit unless directly in front.

So that would require a 1 UD gap right round each flank then?

Which I suppose would effectively mean a 1 UD gap in front of the unit being passed through.

The rules state that if there is a unit too close (in front) of the unit being passed through then it is 'pushed back' to make room.

That would imply that a 1 UD gap is not required in front.

I had this query with Herve and yes there has to be a 1 UD gap between units situated to the side of the unit being passed through even if that is in a diagonal direction . When passing through you have to have sufficient movement to be able to entirely pass through a unit, if there isn't space you can displace another unit to make space in a retreat or flee move. If you also make a retreat move to can pass through to behind a unit in a position of support even if it means going more than 2UD ( for infantry). 1UD from corners or side edge EXCEPT for unit's directly in front or behind.

To put it another way. A unit passing from front or behind is passing round the unit and requires a passage 1 UD wide at each side.

A picture would be so much easier!
